The Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy Unit was established at ISMETT in Spring 2007.

Its research and cell production activities currently support ISMETT’s clinical cell transplantation programs aimed at the treatment of end-stage organ failure. The mid-term goal is to become the reference center for the production, storage and distribution of clinical-grade cells to trasplant centers of the Euro-Mediterranean area, that intend to implement cell therapy programs.

The GMP Facility of the Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy Unit was established within the context of a project promoted by ISMETT and the Budget Department of the Region of Sicily within the framework of the program “ICT for Territories Excellence”.

Thanks to a grant of over 6 million euros awarded by the Italian Ministry of Innovation and Technologies and the Sicilian Region, it was possible to establish a high-technology GMP Facility, designed using innovative engineering and architectural solutions and managed through an advanced quality management system. The facility is fully compliant to current GMP guidelines and meets the highest quality standards in the field.

Further goals of the project are to transfer know-how and research outcomes to the entrepreneurial world and more specifically, to its high-tech  allied industries, along with human capital development through an advanced training program aimed at young Italian scientists.

The scientific excellence of the research activities carried out is warranted by the close collaboration with the project partners and with the network of leading centers in the field, with which the Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy Unit develops common research projects, and promotes knowledge sharing and diffusion.

The collaboration with the Ri.MED Foundation

Many of the activities carried out in the labs of  ISMETT’s Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy Unit overlap with the research interests of the Ri.MED Foundation. Since the latter does not yet have its own laboratories, a lease agreement was signed, which allows RIMED personnel to independently carry out its own research activity in ISMETT’s laboratories, against an equal sharing of management expenses, starting from January 2008.

1 Regenerative Medicine / Tissue Engineering Fellow

UPMC Italy is seeking an outstanding candidate for its Fellowship in Tissue Engineering, funded within a collaborative research program directed by Professor Ranieri Cancedda and recently established at ISMETT, in collaboration with the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh and the Regenerative Medicine Laboratory of the University of Genoa and of the National Institute for Cancer Research of Genoa. The selected candidate will contribute to the development of innovative cell therapy and tissue engineering products for the repair/regeneration of skeletal tissues (cartilage and bone), see to the implementation of suitable biomaterials to be adopted as scaffold and cell carriers and, in the case of bone, to the use of growth factors and bioactive molecules to support angiogenesis and vascularization of the newly formed tissue.
