The “Advanced Therapies” section aims at providing scientific and legislative information on new medicinal products. The main objective is to streamline and better secure access to advanced therapies for patients improving research, development and authorization procedures for genic therapy, somatic cell therapy and tissue engineering products.

In recent years, the science has witnessed the development of promising genic and cell approaches aimed at preventing and treating diseases and disorders of the human body such as cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, hereditary diseases and other neurodegenerative pathologies. To date, experiments on these genic and cell products seem to be very promising and include treatments for skin, cartilage and bone pathologies and lesions.
Living somatic cells used in patients are either autologous (the donor and recipient are the same person), allogenic (the donor and recipient are two different people) or xenogenic (the donor's cells come from animals). These cells have undergone substantial manipulation to achieve a given therapeutic, diagnostic or preventive effect (with metabolic, pharmacological or immunological means).

The “Advanced Therapies” section is managed by the three institutional partners, namely the ISS (Italian Higher Institute for Health), CNT (Italian National Transplantation Agency) and AIFA (Italian National Pharmaceuticals Agency), and it belongs to the ITC-E2 Project promoted by the Region of Sicily and ISMETT.

1 Regenerative Medicine / Tissue Engineering Fellow

UPMC Italy is seeking an outstanding candidate for its Fellowship in Tissue Engineering, funded within a collaborative research program directed by Professor Ranieri Cancedda and recently established at ISMETT, in collaboration with the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh and the Regenerative Medicine Laboratory of the University of Genoa and of the National Institute for Cancer Research of Genoa. The selected candidate will contribute to the development of innovative cell therapy and tissue engineering products for the repair/regeneration of skeletal tissues (cartilage and bone), see to the implementation of suitable biomaterials to be adopted as scaffold and cell carriers and, in the case of bone, to the use of growth factors and bioactive molecules to support angiogenesis and vascularization of the newly formed tissue.
Enclosed is the call for applications
